FAQ
Common questions
Does trip tracking drain my battery?
Not much. GPS records at full resolution only while you're actually driving. On iPhone, tracking idles once you stop. On Android, DeductSnap checks your location periodically while parked so it can catch the start of your next drive, which is why the "Auto-tracking on" notification stays visible.
What happens if I drive somewhere personal?
Detected trips land in a review queue. Drag the trip onto Personal and it's filed apart from your businesses, so it stays out of their reports. If you'd rather not keep it at all, open the trip and choose Ignore Trip. Ignored trips can be restored for 31 days if you change your mind.
Which mileage rate does the app use?
The IRS standard mileage rate for the year the trip happened: $0.72/mile for 2026, $0.70 for 2025, $0.67 for 2024. A new year's rate is added once the IRS publishes it; until then, trips are valued at the latest published rate.
Do I need a signal for receipts and trips?
No. Receipts and trips are captured with no signal and queued on your phone, then synced when you're back online and the app is open. Automatic trip detection is a separate matter: it depends on your phone's operating system, not on the network. See the next question.
Will DeductSnap detect every drive automatically?
Not always. Automatic detection needs your phone to keep DeductSnap running in the background and to keep telling it where you are. iPhones do both. Android is less predictable: its built-in power saving can switch off GPS part-way through a drive, and some manufacturers add their own battery and auto-launch controls on top that suspend apps even when Android's own settings are already correct. A trip can then start late, be recorded without its route, or be missed. When DeductSnap notices, it offers to add the drive afterwards.
Starting a trip yourself is the most reliable way to record the full route. If you are on an Android phone and drives go missing, check your manufacturer's auto-launch and background battery settings for DeductSnap.
Android: how do I stop the battery saver suspending DeductSnap?
Android's battery optimization can pause DeductSnap's background work while your phone sits idle in a pocket or a cup holder. When that happens a trip can start late, record without part of its route, or stay open after you have parked. Marking the app as unrestricted fixes it, and costs very little: GPS still runs at full resolution only while you are actually driving.
Open Settings › Apps › DeductSnap › Battery and choose Unrestricted. On some phones the same control lives under Settings › Battery › Battery optimization › All apps › DeductSnap › Don't optimize. The exact wording varies by manufacturer.
On Android 12 and later, also turn on Settings › Apps › DeductSnap › Alarms & reminders, so the timers that start and end a trip fire on time. Reinstalling the app clears these settings, so set them again afterwards.
iPhone has no equivalent setting and needs nothing here. On Android, this is separate from your manufacturer's own auto-launch controls described in the previous question, and both may need to be set: one can suspend the app even when the other is already correct.
Android: why did only part of my drive get recorded?
Android has a built-in power saver called Doze. When it decides the phone has been sitting still, it switches off the GPS hardware. A phone resting in a cup holder on a smooth road can look perfectly still to it, so Doze can start in the middle of a drive. DeductSnap keeps running, but the phone stops telling it where you are, and the trip ends at the last place it knew about.
Plugging in prevents it. Doze cannot start while the phone is charging, so a car charger is the simplest and most reliable fix. Marking DeductSnap Unrestricted under Battery, as described above, is worth doing as well.
The miles are not simply dropped. When DeductSnap sees that you have moved a long way from the last place it recorded you, it offers that drive in your review queue so you can add it with one tap. And starting a trip yourself is the most reliable way to record the whole route, beginning to end.
This one is specific to Android. iPhone has nothing equivalent to Doze and is not affected.
Android: my receipt photos are missing after I reinstalled the app. How do I get them back?
Your receipts and their details (vendor, date, amount, category, business) are all still there; only the images are missing. Every photo you save is also kept in a DeductSnap album on your phone, and uninstalling the app does not delete it, but a reinstalled app needs your permission to open those photos again. To get them back:
1. Open any receipt that shows no image and tap Restore Photos.
2. Allow access when Android asks. On Android 13 and later this opens the DeductSnap folder: tap Use this folder, then Allow.
3. DeductSnap finds the photo for every receipt on its own and tells you how many it restored.
Nothing is re-scanned, no receipt is created or counted twice, and nothing you typed is changed. If a photo was renamed or moved, open its receipt and tap Choose a photo instead.
Don't see Restore Photos? Update DeductSnap from Google Play. Until the update reaches you, you can put a photo back by creating the receipt again from it: tap + New Receipt, then Library, choose the photo from the DeductSnap album, check the details and save, then delete the old copy of that receipt.
Photos are only on the phone that took them, unless your plan includes cloud backup: on Plus, Premium and Elite most images come back from the cloud by themselves, and the steps above cover any that don't, such as photos taken before you upgraded. Keep the DeductSnap album: on the free Essential plan it is the only copy of your receipt images.
Can I switch phones without losing data?
Yes for your records: your account, trips, reports, subscription and receipt details (vendor, date, amount, category) all live in the cloud. Sign in on the new phone and they sync down. Receipt images depend on your plan. On Plus, Premium and Elite they are backed up to the cloud too and come across with everything else. On the free Essential plan they stay on the old phone, in the DeductSnap album of its photo library, and are not copied to the new one, so keep the old phone or save that album before you switch. On any plan, let pending uploads finish on the old phone first.
Can I use DeductSnap on my computer?
Yes, on every paid plan -
Plus,
Premium and
Elite. Sign in at
deductsnap.com/app in any browser to review your trips and receipts on a full screen, correct a category or amount, view receipt images, run reports, and manage your businesses, vehicles and teams. It's the same account and the same data as your phone, kept in sync. Capture still happens on the phone, where the camera and the GPS are, so there's no receipt upload from the browser. On the free Essential plan the app works exactly as it always has on your phone; the web app is what the paid plans add. Essential keeps receipt images on the device rather than in the cloud, which is why the web app starts at Plus.
Can I track more than one business or vehicle?
Yes, every plan (including the free one) supports unlimited businesses and vehicles, each with its own expenses and trips.
How do referral rewards work?
Share your invite link from Settings. When someone signs up through it and subscribes, you earn 50% of their plan's full monthly price for each of their first 2 billing cycles, even if they paid less. Subscriptions are billed by the App Store and Google Play, which don't support per-account bill credit. On Android, your reward is added as bonus days on your own subscription, converted to days at your plan's price. On iPhone, it is saved to your account as a reward balance.
Is my data private?
Your data is stored in your account and used to provide the service: capturing expenses and trips and generating your reports. Receipt images on paid plans are stored in private cloud storage only you can access. See the Privacy Policy in the app for details.
